This is the personal letter opener owned by Bill Mitchell, the head of design for General Motors from 1958 to 1977. An encounter with a shark, while diving in the Bahamas, inspired the production 1963 Corvette Stingray, designed by Larry Shinoda, under Mitchells direction. This letter opener had broken and was left behind to Peter Brock, the youngest designer ever hired by GM styling. Brock's sketch had been chosen by Mitchell to become the next Corvette, The Stingray for 1963. Peter Brock had this letter opener restored and framed recently and presented it to Ed Welburn, General Motor's Vice President of Global Design, at the Concourse D'Elegance this past weekend in Florida. Ed Welburn will hang this in his office, which happens to be the same office in which Bill Mitchell sat! As you can see this Stingray Letter Opener, was influential in the design of the C7 Corvette Stingrays current logo in the photo below.
